Creating portraits/art for experience or exposure seems to be a demand that is increasing in popularity, social media has given an outlet to people from all over to ask for things that would have been out of the norm years ago because it can all be done anonymously. As an artist putting a price on my work is already a difficult task.
HOW DO I CHARGE FOR ALL THE WORK ,TIME AND CARE I PUT INTO EACH PIECE? ONE THING I DO KNOW IS THE FACT THAT ZERO $$$$$ IS NOT THE ANSWER.
Do i work for free in hopes that in the future i would be recommended to others, get more work?
I'm currently on several social media sites. Instagram seems to be the worst offender , almost every week someone will ask me i would make a portrait for them with payment being exposure or a shout on their popular page because they have many followers. This is very annoying and honestly insulting. in reality is this exposure worth it or are you just subjecting yourself to more people asking for free work after they speak to this person.
Even worse is when a celebrity is asking for work in exchange for showing your work off on their page. I'ts so tempting to say Hell yes. OH MY GOD !! MAYBE I'LL GET FAMOUS !! MAYBE I'LL GET TO MEET THEM!! MAYBE THEIR CELEBRITY FRIENDS WILL GET COMMISSIONS FROM ME!! GETTING A SHOUT OUT FROM THEM WILL MAKE ME FAMOUS!! But more often than not this isn't the case, usually what's happening is that people, celebrities and businesses are taking advantage of their status to get free work. The way i see it is that if someone tells you to do it for experience or exposure its a red flag . You already had enough exposure that they were able to find you and like your work in the first place.
AND GOD ALMIGHTY ...EVEN WORSE. your friends asking for free or pennies on the dollar work. They know your struggle. They tell you how great you are, how you're wasting your time doing regular work .
"DO IT FULL TIME "!! they say . "YOUR WORK IS AMAZING"!! "wait..what? REALLY? !!! you charge how much? " EVEN FOR ME?' Lol .
You wouldn't go to a restaurant ,ask for a meal and say you'll pay for it by telling all your friends how great the food or service was or an architect to design a house on the hopes of you telling your friends about it. You would not think of waking up every day and go to work without getting a pay check so why is it so hard to fathom that artists should get paid for their work also.? I have been perfecting my craft for over 30 years now , I paid for school and my time is valuable( at least to me and my family )
There's always going to be someone out there who does it cheaper and even better and it's ok to want to get more bang for your buck , let's just remember that behind those drawings and pieces of art is someone trying to make a living .
